A historic place at the Barranco del Infierno
Even in the days of the Guanches (native inhabitants of Tenerife), the municipality of Adeje in Tenerife south at higher altitudes was considered to be very fertile, especially around the Barranco del Infierno. For this reason, the Guanches settled in the region of Adeje even at that time.
Around 1495, the first houses and settlements have been constructed in Adeje. In the old town centre of Adeje, you can still see it partly. There are also the Basilica and the Ayuntamiento (district council).
In the course of time, the town certainly also changed and thus the town of Adeje consists nowadays of the old, upper part, where you can find a hotel with historic walls, and the lower part with beautiful villas and modern housing estates.
The town began to change, when the inhabitants understood, that they could make use of the sunny location, especially on the coast of the municipality of Adeje. Consequently, over the years, more and more hotels, apartment complexes, beaches, golf courses and other attractions came into being along the coast.
The former fishing town of Los Cristianos became more and more a destination for holiday-makers, looking for sun. Almost at the same time, the tourist towns of Las Américas, San Eugenio and Fañabe came into being. In the meantime, the rustic fishing town of La Caleta has become a holiday destination, too.
Due to the fact, that the south-west coast is one of the warmest and sunniest regions of Tenerife, Adeje has become more and more important and today it is one of the wealthiest municipalities of Tenerife.
Attractions and sights in Adeje:
A popular hiking destination is the ravine Barranco del Infierno. The hike begins in Adeje, at the end of the town. The small path leads along the Barranco through dry ground, past numerous terraces and steep slopes. During the hike, you can see a large diversity of endemic flora and fauna. At the end of the path, you come to a wonderful waterfall, rising from overhanging rock.
