Beach Playa del Médano - the longest natural beach on Tenerife

The beach Playa del Medano is the longest natural sand beach in the south of Tenerife. It spreads from Montaña Roja on one side, up to the far end of the small town El Medano.

The beach

Playa del Médano is the longest natural beach on Tenerife and it spreads crescent-like over more than 2 miles between El Médano harbour and the 550feet high and redishly appearing Montaña Roja. Within the small bays between the light rocks one always finds a quite place to stay.

The beach was awarded with the "Blue Flag" for tidyness, water quality and life-guard-service in 2011. Due to the soft blowing winds Playa del Médano is not only perfect for sun worhippers, but also for kiters and windsurfers. It is an amazing sight to watch the kiters and windsurfers roam across the water with their colourful sails. Their starting place is the south-end of the bay.

Suitability for children

The water is very calm and only a few waves reach the beach. Families with their kids love to bath in Playa del Médano. On sundays, on holidays und during vacation time many local families use the beach area righ beyond the plaza del Médano in the heart of the town.

The town of El Médano

The coastal town El Médano lies in the area of Granadilla de Abona. It has grown considerably during the last decades. One of the reasons for that are the perfect conditions for windsurfers and kiters. Furthermore, many Spaniards have bought themselves a 2nd apartment in El Médano to spend the weekends or their holidays in the South.

Trekking enthusiast will also enjoy the beach of El Médano. You can take long walks along the beach and even can take a small hike up to the peak of Montaña Roja and enjoy the fantastic view from there. For younger people the Plaza offers some small discotheques to spend the evenings in.
